Several wildfires were reported in Southern United States over the last days. The Florida Forest Protection Bureau reports for 30 March 1999 26 fires, burning on a total area of 495.2 acres. SOUTHERN AREA COORDINATION CENTER MORNING REPORT

SOUTHERN AREA
Dry conditions are expected throughout the Southern Area region today. However the storm system from Thursday will slowly head northeast making for a rainy day across North Carolina and southern Virginia. Temperatures will be cooler today, reaching the 40’s – 50’s for most part of the Southern region, and the 60’s for the lower states from Texas to Georgia. Florida will be in the mid 70’s.
ALABAMA
No fire activity reported.
ARKANSAS/OKLAHOMA
Arkansas/Oklahoma Interagency Coordination Center (AR-AOC): Helicopter 4HC will be at Mena Helibase and 85BH will be at Clarksville Helibase.
Much drier weather and slightly cooler temperatures across Oklahoma and Arkansas today with RH’s in the lower 20’s.
Ozark-St. Francis NF’s (AR-OZF): Accomplished 6 RX burns for 437 acres, 03/24.
Buffalo National River (AR-BUP) Accomplished 1 RX burn for 1200 acres, 03/22-03/24. Helicopter 85HB assisted with the RX burn.
FLORIDA
Merrit Island FWR (FL-MIR): Accomplished 1 RX burn for 200 acres.
GEORGIA
State of Georgia (GA-GAS): 105 fires for 2472 acres, 3/24. This includes one wildfire in Meriwether County that burned approximately 225 acres and one fire in N. Bryan county that burned for approximately 800 acres.
KENTUCKY
Fire activity building, no precipitation expected through Tuesday.
LOUISIANA
No fire activity reported.
MISSISSIPPI
No fire activity reported.
NORTH CAROLINA
No fire activity reported.
SOUTH CAROLINA
State of South Carolina (SC-SCS) 60 fires for 800 acres, 3/24.
Francis Marion-Sumter NFs (SC-FMF): Accomplished 2 RX burns for 831 acres, 03/24.
Carolina Sandhills FWR (SC-CRR) Accomplished 1 RX burn for 165 acres, 03/24.
Cloudy weather is moving through the state with scattered moisture. Fire danger is low to moderate, with little fire activity expected on Friday, but increasing again through the weekend.
TENNESSEE
State of Tennessee (TN-TNS): 64 fires for 374 acres, 3/24.

VIRGINIA

CURRENT SITUATION:
Fire activity continues in the Southern area. The National Interagency Coordination Center processed orders for miscellaneous overhead.
OUTLOOK:
A cold front will move through Florida today bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms. Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy. Warmer and drier conditions are forecast for Monday through Thursday. Highs will range from the 70’s to lower 80’s.
An upper level low pressure system will move across West Texas bringing mostly cloudy skies, scattered showers and thunderstorms through Monday. Tuesday through Thursday will be partly cloudy, warmer and breezy. Highs will range from the mid 60’s to mid 70’s until Tuesday when temperatures will climb into the mid 80’s.
Remarks on Prescribed Burning:
The high-temperature events depicted by the NOAA AVHRR satellite in the Southeast are not all wildfires. At this time of the year prescribed burning operations are conducted routinely.
