Forest Fires in the Russian Federation

8 May 2000

MOSCOW (AP) - Forest fires burned out of control in parts of Russia's Far East on Friday, 5 May 2000, fueled by unusually dry and windy weather, a news report said.Sixty-eight fires were raging on more than 11,100 acres (4,500 ha) of forest in provinces along Russia's Pacific coast and in Eastern Siberia, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

High winds and unseasonably dry weather this spring fueled the fires. In one region, Buryatia, fires have already destroyed about 24,700 acres (10,000 ha) of forest, the report said. About 900 firefighters were battling the blazes, according to ITAR-Tass. (by The Associated Press, 5 May 2000).

Selected fire occurrence maps are prepared daily by the Russian GFMC correspondent Dr. Anatoly Sukhinin, Fire Laboratory of the Sukachev Institute of Forest, Karsnoyarsk. The size of individual fires is indicated at each fire location.

Bibliography on fire in ecosystems of boreal Eurasia:
One of the results of the first international fire science conference in the Russian Federation (1993) was the publication of a monograph on fire in boreal Eurasia, including some selected contributions on boreal North America. The literature cited in the monograph contains numerous publications which in many cases are not easily accessible. To facilitate literature search the bibliographical sources are provided by topic (chapter).
