29 August 2000

Two Spanish firefighters died yesterday when a forest fire suddenly changed direction and trapped them. The two men were part of a team trying to tackle a blaze in a wooded area in northern Leon province. They were surrounded by flames after a change in the direction of wind blowing in the area. Fires in woods and scrubland are common in Spain's long, hot summers. Several other fires were reported to be burning around the country yesterday.
