Forest Fires in Spain

19 August 1999

Spain experiences for the moment the severest forest fires of this summer season. Close to Granada 1,100 hectares of forests burned till now.

A new fire broke out yesterday in Bunol near Valencia. Several people have been evacuated. Within the last days about 2,000 hectares of pine woods had already burned south to Valencia. The authorities suspect arsonists or people who are careless as the main fire reason. According to the opinion of environmentalists the reason of the fires in the nature protection areas in Alicante and Granada are arsonists who use fire as a tool   for ground speculation, and who want to have these areas declared as building land.
