Forest and Cropland Fires in Germany: 3 August 1999

Wildfires in Germany

3 August 1999

Due to persistently hot weather on Monday a series of new, small forest fires occured in Northern Germany.

26 fires were reported in the district of Hannover. Woods, grain and stubble fields burned on a 0.6 hectar large area.

At the moment there is the highest fire danger in Brandenburg this year. Mainly grain fields were burning. Since last Friday 7.4 hectares of woods have been destroyed by 24 fires. Several hundred hectares grain fields were destroyed. The fires arised particularly fast in areas, where the ecosystem is established by coniferous forests on sandy soils. According to statistics, a third of all fires in Germany blazes up in the state of Brandenburg.

Carelessness is responsible for most fires.
