Severe Forest Fires in China

8 April 1999

More severe forest fires are reported from Northern China, according to the German Press Agency (dpa). Extremely strong winds have fanned fires in Shanxi Province. As a consequence of the spring drought there is restricted availability of water for fire suppression. It was reported that 23 people were killed by the wildfires. The fires in this early spring fire season are extremely hot and difficult to control.

GFMC correspondents report that the fires started around 4 April and have reached 1000 ha by 6 April and are still burning at moment.
