Forest Fires in Central America

The NOAA/AVHRR satellite images below reflect the overall fire situation in Central America as it was highlighted in the GFMC reports during the last weeks (starting with the Honduras fire report on 31 March 2000).

Fig.1. This three image “slide” contains one image each of Guatemala and the northern Yucatan from the 21 May 2000 NOAA -14 pass and a third image covering both areas from the 2 May NOAA-14 pass. Fairly heavy cloud cover has been evident over much of Central America for about two weeks. From the reduced number of heat signatures (red) in the later images, It appears that the cloud clusters have provided some much needed rainfall. The reduction in the number of heat signatures is especially noticeable in northern Guatemala and adjacent areas in Mexico.
