Forest Fires in Central America

4 May 2000


The NOAA/AVHRR satellite images of 2 May 2000 reflect the overall fire situation in Central America as it was highlighted in the GFMC reports during the last weeks (starting with the Honduras fire report on 31 March 2000). Heat signatures can be seen from fires burning in several countries of Central America. Some fires may be obsured by the cloud cover.

The image of 2 May 2000 shows burn scars from the large fires in Guatemala and Mexico. The image from 24 April 2000 shows the heat signatures from the active fires at that time. The third image has combined the two images to verify that many of the dark areas on the image of 2 May were caused by recent fires.
