Fire Management 2002


Twoshort courses Fire Management 2002 will be conducted at PE Technikon, SaasveldCampus, George, South Africa, between 25 and 27 March 2002. The courses will bepresented by Dr. Neels de Ronde.

CourseNo. 1. Integrated Fire Management Strategies

Date:25–26 March 2002

Topics:
Fuel dynamics, fuel appraisal, fuel classification and fuel modelling, fireweather and fire behaviour prediction, fire hazard rating, fire danger rating,prescribed burning application: Burning techniques, safety measures, schedulingand recording, result assessment and mopping up.

Whoshould attend?
Forestry, nature conservation and other managers involved in fireprevention/combat, nature reserve, mountain catchment and/or industrialplantation management. The course will consist of 1.5 days theoretical work.Course fee: R 1200/student. Students will have to arrange their ownaccommodation.

CourseNo. 2: Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, and Fire Behaviour Modelling

Date:26-27 March 2002

Topics
Risk assessment: The Urban Interface, fire hazard rating, natural fuelclassification and modelling and computer-assisted fire behaviour prediction forprescribed burning and wildfire spread monitoring.

Whoshould attend?
Regional fire managers involved in wildland fire fighting, planning and managingprescribed burning programs.
The course will consist of 0.5 day theoretical lecturing and 1-day”hands-on” computer application. Course fee: R 1200-00/student.Students will have to arrange their own accommodation.

Registrationand Certificate
Registration fees will be payable before the courses are presented, unless priorarrangements have been made with the course presenter.
Students will have to complete an exam at the end of each course, based on whichthe examiner will decide which students qualify. Qualifying students will bepresented with an official PE Technikon certificate.
Registration will take place at the main Saasveld Administration building on theCampus, at 08h00 on the 25th of March 2002 for Course No. 1, and at 14h00 on the26th of March 2001 for Course No. 2.

The contentsof the course should provide Fire Ecology IV (B-tech) students with an adequateintroduction to fire ecology/fire management, but is also (particularly) aimedto provide the fire manager sufficient material for practical implementation,particularly in the fields of integrated fire prevention, fire simulation andprescribed burning application.
