II International Symposium on Fire Economics, Planning and Policy: A Global Vision
19-22 April, 2004, Córdoba, Spain
Theeconomic relevance of wildland fire management and protection programs is evergrowing, particularly considering mounting wildfire costs and losses globally, and the justifications required for budget allocations to management andprotection of forest ecosystems. A diversity of wildland uses is affected, fromrecreation and wildlife interests to traditional commodity outputs. To achieve abalanced distribution of budget funds according to the priorities established instrategic and economic planning processes, appropriate analytical tools andmethodologies are needed. The second Fire Economics, Planning, and Policysymposium to be held in Córdoba, Spain (2004) will build on the foundationestablished with the first symposium conducted in San Diego, California (1999).However, this second edition includes a broader scope of interests and willaddress a wider geographic area. Based in the southern Europe MediterraneanBasin the forum will provide its international audience the opportunity toexchange ideas regarding the economics of fire management, and to share thelatest in development and technologies available for optimizing fire managementexpenditures.
The symposium isorganized around eight major themes:
-
Regional and global vision of the forest fire problem
-
Theory and methods for strategic fire planning
-
Forest fires and sustainable forest management
-
Public policies and forest management
-
Trade-offs between fuels treatments and suppression activities
- Local, regional, and national fire management plans and related research efforts (poster session)
- Where do we go from here? Future economic implications of forest fires (round table session)
