3rd International Fire Ecology and Management Congress

3rdInternational Fire Ecology and Management Congress

Callfor Special Sessions

 13-17 November 2006, San Diego, California, U.S.A.

The Third International Fire Ecology and Management Congress will be held in San Diego, California ,  13 – 17 November 2006 , at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center. The Congress is hosted by the Association for Fire Ecology, in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, the Tall Timbers Research Station, and Washington State University. 29 special and 24 contributed sessions will cover a broad spectrum of topics pertinent to the ecology and management of wildland fire. Some of the session themes include the science and community actions associated with the San Diego wildfires of 2003, Wildland Fire Use, remote sensing and mapping of wildfires, fire effects on plants, animals, and ecosystems, fire’s interaction with invasive plants, fire history and regimes, fire modeling, social and community issues, smoke management, fire weather needs, fuels management, fire behavior, restoration and postfire rehabilitation. There are special sessions about fire in boreal regions of Alaska, Canada and Russia, Mexico, and the tropics, including effects of climate change on fire and ecosystems. This is truly an international event, with over 600 papers and posters being presented by representatives of 22 countries from 6 continents. The goal is to explore different perspectives on wildland fire ecology and management, create new ideas through conversation, build new partnerships, and to learn new concepts. The Congress will display new research results, methods for study, models and technology, and management practices.

The plenary sessions focus on “Changing Fire Regimes: Context and Consequences,” a theme chosen because we are concerned that wildfires are becoming larger and more severe, despite our best efforts. We are concerned about the effects of these wildfires on natural resources and ecosystems, and their economic and intangible values. We recognize that these fires have increasing impacts on people. 11 plenary speakers will explore and develop this topic, describing basic climate change science and its implications, the effects of climate change on fire regimes in boreal, temperate and tropical systems, and the implications for fire management policy and programs.

Other Congress events include a optional Monday morning short courses, an evening exhibit, the poster session, Sunday and Friday field trips to areas affected by the 2003 San Diego wildfires, the AFE annual meeting, and the annual AFE Awards banquet. Attendees are encouraged to discuss and endorse the “San Diego Declaration on Climate Change and Fire Management” during the week of the Congress.
