11th Fire Management Symposium

Background and purpose

Globally, effective wildfire management is impeded by a lack of integration between research results, technological development and efforts by fire managers to prevent, suppress and protect the environment, human wellbeing and assets against wildfire.

This event aims to streamline the efforts of natural resource managers, engineers and scientists through an integrated approach to ensure better management throughout the wildfire community by making the different role-players aware of each other’s realities. You are invited to join fire managers and authorities from different disciplines and land uses (Nature Conservation, Agriculture, Disaster Management, Forestry, Local Authorities, etc.) for a range of informative presentations, and exciting networking opportunities.


The focus of this year’s event will be on scientific solutions and management of wildfire risk. 


The 2016 Fire Management Symposium promises to be an once in a lifetime event. Not only because of the unique setting of the venue, but because of the conglomeration of international and local fire specialists that will share their expertise in a very practical and applied manner.

Internationally renowned fire scientist Prof Domingos Viegas will deliver the key note address and will be supported by local fire specialists such as Prof WinstonTrollope. We will also proudly host various international fire specialists from Canada, Australia, USA and Europe. The final programme will be circulated as soon as all the speakers have been confirmed

The 2nd and 3rd days of the event will provide the opportunity to visit fire trials within the Park that has in some cases been monitored for more than 50 years. Delegates may also make use of the opportunity to take part in guided walks within the park to experience the pristine nature of the South African savannah.

In General

Due to the exclusivity of the event only 150 delegates will be accepted for the first day of the event. For safety reasons only two groups of 50 delegates will be allowed to participate in the field visits on the 2nd and 3rd days of the event. Accommodation has provisionally been reserved in the Skukuza rest camp for the first 150 people registering for the event.
