WildlandUrban Interface Symposium 2002

Sponsoredby the Thompson Okanagan Inter-Agency Committee & Kamloops Fire Centre
11-14 March 2002, Penticton, British Columbia, Canada

Thompson Okanagan Inter-agency Committee Backgrounder

In the mid 1980’s it was becoming evident to wildland and structural fire fighters that the potential for catastrophic losses from wildfire entering into developed areas was on the increase. The possibility of wildfire destroying homes, businesses and threatening the lives of the people who live and work there was a concern. The Ministry of Forests, Kamloops, BC took the lead role in the development of the committee.
Since its beginning, the Committee has expanded in scope and effectiveness to include Prevention, Response and Recovery, not only in the Wildland Urban Interface but also other emergencies. The Committee consists of mandated agencies whose jurisdictions interact when emergent situations threaten the public’s safety or property. In addition to the mandated authorities it includes the private sector service providers and the public.
The Committee meets to discuss, review, co-ordinate, evaluate, plan, propose and express a common view on matters that evolve from the Wildland Urban Interface as well as other emergencies, such as flooding, which require more than one authority’s response.
