New Communication and Information Technologies in Forest Fire Prevention and Suppression

22-23 June 2001, Kalamata, SW Peloponnese, Greece


The main objective of this event is to present new, emerging or being adopted, communication and information technologies in forest fire prevention and suppression, including the development of the EDRIM (Electronic Discussion for Risk Management) network. It is intended to obtain, through the presentations and discussions, an overview of the current state of the art and the degree of user acceptance of these technologies.

The seminar and workshop is organized according to a resolution adopted by the Ministers during the 8th Ministerial Meeting of the Council of Europe’s EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement.


The main subjects and issues that will be addressed by the seminar are:

  • Collection, management and utilization of forest fires statistics
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • Space technologies/Remote sensing
  • Communication technologies
  • International and European Cooperation


The seminar is open and free to everyone interested in the subjects above. Invited participants include:

  • Secretariat and country representatives of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards
  • Representatives of the European Commission, the JRC, and ESA
  • Speakers from academic institutions and operational organizations in Europe

Languages: English and Greek. Translation will be provided
