Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have established close cooperation through the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit. The unit serves as the integrated United Nations emergency response mechanism to activate and provide international assistance to countries facing environmental emergencies, including wildland fires.
Interface Procedures between the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit and the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC)
Both institutions have signed interface procedures concerning information sharing and mutual support in responding to wildland fire emergencies. For details see GFMC Hotline Assistance web page at:
UNEP/OCHA offers the GFMC tools for advising / supporting nations and the UN System in capacity building in fire management and wildfire disaster risk reduction, a partnership with the UNEP/OCHA Environmental Emergencies Center (EEC):
