Historically,the fire regime was the major regulator of the lodgepole pine forest dynamics inCanada, including the age-class distribution. Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB)activity is related to the amount of old susceptible pine on the landscape. Weare looking for a highly self-motivated post-doctoral fellow to work on aresearch project of the interaction between fire and MPB, under the CanadianFederal Government’s MPB Initiative. The project involves the development of aspatially explicit model of MPB dynamics, and simulation of various fire regimeson the age structure of lodgepole pine forests and susceptibility of theseforests to MPB. The position will be for two years under the supervision of Drs.Hugh Barclay and Chao Li and would be physically located at the NorthernForestry Centre, Canadian Forest Service in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.Thepriority shall be given to Canadian citizens.

Applicantsshould have a Ph.D. in landscape ecology, or forest ecology, or insect ecology,or a related discipline, with strong communication skill, statistics, geographicinformation systems, and programming experiences. The University of NewBrunswick (UNB) (Faculty of Forestry) is seeking a M.Sc. or a Ph.D. or aPost-Doctorial fellow (PDF) to undertake research in the application of remotesensing to predict fuel moisture content over various ecosystems from opticaland thermal infrared MODIS and RADARSAT-2 polarimetric images.

The position is located atUNB in Fredericton Canada. This position will involve assembling and developingthe relevant climatic and terrain data over the region, and the processing ofMODIS and RADARSAT-2 imagery.

We seek applications fromstudents who have a background in remote sensing or in GIS. The ideal candidatewill have strong skills in remote sensing, GIS and statistics. The PDF isexpected to have an established publication record.

DUTIES: DEPARTMENT: University of Maryland Department of Geography, working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, Greenbelt MD. A motivated researcher is sought to assist in the analysis of African MODIS burned area products (see http://modis-fire.gsfc.nasa.gov/products.asp) in support of a NASA funded activity lead by Dr. D. Roy. Full-time is preferred, part-time will be considered for an exceptional candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant should have a recent PhD in remote sensing or related numerate field and be able to communicate effectively with scientific and technical staff. Experience in the analysis of terrestrial remote sensing data using commercial packages is required. Skills in GIS, African land cover-land use research, spatial statistics, computer modeling, and programming in a Unix/C environment are desirable.
