SAFARI 2000 activities after June 1998 and future activities 1999 onward:

 

  • 11-18 July 1998: SAFARI 2000 Workshop, Blydepoort, South Africa – participant list and agenda on the web – jointly sponsored by US National Science Foundation and RSA Foundation for Research Development

  • 23 July 1998: SAFARI 2000 Briefing meeting to RSA agencies, the US Embassy and Science Attache and the Commonwealth Science Council (UK)

  • August 1998: Formation of web page (http://safari.gecp.virginia.edu). Comments are welcome.

  • August 1998: Formulation of a letter to the South African side of the US/RSA Bi-national commission about the launch of SAFARI 2000 – letter available on the web.

  • August 1998: Submission of a number of South African proposals on SAFARI 2000 with the largest being the SAFARI 2000 LEAD proposal submitted by Bob Scholes on behalf of ENVIRONMENTEK, CSIR, and associated RSA institutions to the South African Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (1.1 Million Rand/yr for 3 yrs). On 22 November 1998: An announcement was received that this competitive proposal has been funded!

  • August 1998: SAFARI 2000 Briefing meeting for MOPITT (Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere) folks at NCAR (US National Center for Atmospheric Research)

  • 19-25 August 1998: SAFARI 2000 Briefing meeting for IGAC (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry) BIBEX (biomass burning experiment group)

  • September 1998: Publication of IGBP Global Change Newsletter (no. 35) on SAC V (Fifth Scientific Advisory Council) with an overview article on SAFARI 2000

  • 8 September 1998: SAFARI 2000 Briefing meeting to NASA, NSF and IGBP-START (Systems for Analysis, Research and Training) at NASA HQ, Wash. DC: Overheads are available on the web in both Powerpoint and Adobe Acrobat formats

  • September 1998: Production of the first executive summary about SAFARI 2000

  • September 1998: Submission of several SAFARI 2000 related proposals to various NASA AO (Announcements of Opportunity)

  • 29-30 September 1998 – Presentation on SAFARI 2000 to meeting of APINA (Air Pollution Information Network Africa) Conference “Policy Dialogue on Regional Air Pollution in Africa”, Harare, Zimbabwe.

  • October 1998: SAFARI 2000 Presentation to International START Steering Committee in Washington, D.C.

  • October 1998: SAFARI 2000 Presentation to State University of New York at Albany

  • October 1998: Submission of SAFARI 2000 Overview Article to IGAC Newsletter “IGACtivities

  • October 1998: Circulation of a preliminary Investigator Matrix for those individuals planning to participate in SAFARI 2000 that would like to be covered under a large blanket MOU between NASA and appropriate parties – Tim Suttles is busy working on this.

  • October 1998: Submission of large aircraft proposal by University of Washington group to participate in SAFARI 2000

  • 16 November 1998: SAFARI 2000 Presentation to Meeting of the Commonwealth Science Council in South Africa

  • November 1998: Representation of SAFARI 2000 at NASA Aerosol Working Group Meeting at NASA/GISS

  • November 1998: Meeting at University of Virginia of SAVE-EOS scientists, several US scientists who were present at the July Meeting in South Africa, one Canadian scientist working with trace gases and hydrocarbons and Prof. Harold Annegarn (South Africa) and Dr. Susan Ringrose (Botswana) – Purpose of the meeting was to coordinate/integrate Botswanan research activities into the SAFARI 2000 Inititative

  • November 1998: Work underway on SAFARI 2000 Overview Article that focuses on NASA EOS AM1 Validation Activities for Earth Observer

    • 16 December 1998: SAFARI 2000 Overview and related measurements of interest to MOPITT Correlative Team Meeting – University of Toronto (Canada)

    • 15-18 December 1998: Representation of SAFARI 2000 at MODIS Science Team Meeting – University of Maryland

    • Middle of December 1998 / Middle of January 1999: Notification of Funding Status for previously submitted proposals End of December – Completion of SAFARI 2000 Rough Draft

    • Middle of January 1999: Submission of SAFARI 2000 related research proposals to NSF

    • 1 February 1999: Submission of NSF Workshop proposal for SAFARI 2000 Science Plan Implementation Plan in late July

    • February 1999: Visit of SAVE Scientists to region for additional field deployment

    • March 1999: SAFARI 2000 Briefing visit to Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique

    • May/June 199: Presentation of SAFARI 2000 Science Plan to IGAC Steering Committee for endorsement

    • End of July 199: SAFARI 2000 Planning Meeting in Gaberone, Botswana, to work on/complete the SAFARI 2000 Implementation Plan – actual dates to be set soon. Coordinator of Meeting: Susan Ringrose, University of Botswana

    • Late Summer 1999: Launch of the NASA EOS AM1 Platform

    • August/September 1999: First SAFARI 2000 Intensive Observational Period (dry season)

    • January/February 2000: Second SAFARI 2000 Intensive Observational Period (wet season)

    • Boreal late Spring/Early Summer 2000: SAFARI 2000 Planning Meeting for Aug/Sep 2000 IOP

    • August/September 2000: Third SAFARI 2000 Intensive Observational Period (dry season)

    • Late Boreal Spring/Early Summer 2000: SAFARI 2000 Results meeting

     

    WHAT IS ON THE RADAR SCREEN BUT IS NOT YET SET:

    • Involvement of on-going regional and local research activities within Southern Africa, both North of RSA and RSA itself

    • Development of southern African regional pool of money for local scientists north of South Africa to tap into to enable participation (work has begun on this, but there is still a way to go)

    • Involvement of European Scientists and their related southern African research (England, France, Germany, etc.)

    • Involvement of the EOS AM1 (Earth Observing System Morning Platform) Instrument teams over and above MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectradiometer) and MOPITT
