We give a brief overview of first results of the measurement campaign SA’ARI-94, which took place in Southern Africa. The intention was to characterize chemically the tropospheric air mass over the subcontinent. Measurement of ozone and particles indicated a persistent layer with an enhanced burden of trace components in the upper part of the mixed layer. The total burden of trace gases was much higher than expected.
