Wildfires in Chornobyl Exclusion Zone are under control
State Emergency Service of Ukraine

On 11 August 2015 fire suppression operations continued on the territories of the former villages Kovshylivka and Buda Varovychi in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ). The total area of the wildfire is 60 hectares, including 15 hectares of crown fire. Currently crown fire is eliminated.

The fire aviation of State Emergency Service of Ukraine made 62 drops of water to put out fires, including 17 sorties by fixed-wing aircraft and 45 by helicopters. Firebreaks longer than 18 km were constructed. Work on suppressing the fire continues. Fire suppression resources involved 98 people and 26 technical units, three firefighting aircraft An-32P and Mi-8 helicopters.

At the town Poliske firefighting continued. On 10 August at 22:05 the fire was contained to an area of 10 hectares (ha). The situation is under control, continues fire suppression on individual spots within a controlled fire perimeter. Firefighting involved 30 people and 5 vehicles.

A forest fire near the former village Kovshylivka was contained on an area of 32 ha. The situation is under control, mopping up of individual spots continues within the controlled perimeter of the fire. Firefighting involved 20 people and 5 technical units.

The radiation background in the territory of the fire is in the normal range and is 0.023 mR/hr, at a rate of 0.050 mR/hr. In Kiev, the background radiation is 0.012 mR/hr at a rate of 0.030mR/h.

 A fire occurs near the former village Kovshilovka, about forty kilometers west of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Based on satellite images, the fire broke out or resumed by the surviving spots of smoldering peat on 8 August 2015. The fire was officially registered by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine the next day, 9 August 2015. Officially the burned area is about 60 ha. However, according to preliminary estimates the real area is ca. 1500 ha. Officially, the number of localized fire, in reality, it is unlikely to reliably localized. Three separate fires were detected covering a total area of about 32 ha. A previous fire started on 29 June 2015 at around 17:00 in the CEZ in the region of the village and township Kovshilovka, Poliske. By the morning of June 30 a fire engulfed an area of 130 hectares. State Emergency Service:

Fire in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone continue to extinguish

In the Chernobyl exclusion zone in the morning on Tuesday firefighters continue to put out forest fires.

“At 7:00 on August 11 the situation is controlled, suppression is continuing,” – said in a statement the State Emergency Service. On Monday in State Emergency Service of Ukraine said that the radiation background in the territory of fires in the CEZ within normal limits, and sunbathing area could be reduced.

Fire near the former villages Kovshilovka and Buda Varovychi in the CEZ began on Saturday, 8 August 2015. Aircraft, planes and helicopters involved in firefighting. This managed to stop the fire spreading to new territories.

“In terms of the specific form of the fire spread, the preliminary conclusion is that the cause of fire is arson,” – said Deputy Director of Emergency Response, Peter Korotynskyy.

Also in Kyiv continue peat areas continued to burn. The Russian branch of Greenpeace International suggest that the scale of fires can be much greater than claimed by the Ukrainian authorities and the burned area is more than a thousand hectares.

According to the environmentalists, the smoke from the fire has reached the Bryansk region of Russia, confirmed by images from the satellite Terra (MODIS instrument).
