Forest Fires in Canada and The United States

27 May 2015

This temperature anomaly map based on data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite, shows North American land surface temperatures from 17-24 May 2015, compared to the 2001–2010 average for the same eight-day period. Shades of red depict areas that were hotter than the long-term average; areas in blue were below average for the week. White pixels were normal, and gray pixels did not have enough data, most likely due to excessive cloud cover.

These extreme temperatures may be the reason of the extreme beahvior of fires such as the one that forced the shut of two sand oil companies mines and the evacuation of hundreds of staff.
The combined Cenovus and Canadian Natural Resources Limited facilities account for 233,000 barrels of oil produced per day or 10 percent of the region’s total upstream oil production.

Also fighting fires in Alberta one pilot died when his Air Tractor 802 firefighting aicraft crashed.
