Fires in Japan
13 March 2011
Following the strong earthquake and Tsunami, which hit Japan on 11 March 2011, large populated areas were devastated by the quake and the tsunami wave, resulting in numerous structural and HAZMAT fires, besides problems encountered in the nuclear power plants of the country.
In some place the fires spread from structures / residential areas to surrounding forests and other vegetated lands.
The following satellite imagery of the MODIS sensor of NASAs Terra satellite depicted wildfires on Kyushu Island on 13 March 2011. The active fires and smoke plumes are burning in Kumamoto Shi (Kumamoto Prefecture), Southeast of Saga City, and North of Mount Aso.
