Fire consumed more than 9,000 hectares in the national territory

GUATEMALA – On Thursday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m., the CONRED Executive Secretariat, through the Response Directorate, issued report 309 (260-2023), detailing that a total of 48 fires are active in the departments of Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Huehuetenango, Petén, Sololá and Zacapa.

Being the department of Petén the most affected with 42 active accidents and the record of 225 during the season, the control and liquidation of the same is carried out under function 16 of the National Response Plan: “Fighting Forest Fires” and by National Protocol for Forest Fire Season 2022-2023.

The CONRED Executive Secretariat and Institutions that make up the System have attended a total of 840 fires, 712 forest and 128 non-forest, which has caused the consumption of 9 thousand 412 hectares in the national territory.

The general population is recommended to avoid burning or slashing in areas with too much slope as they can cause fires which are a threat to ecosystems and cultural heritage, generating pollution and health problems.
