MEXICO – Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Three forest fires have been reported so far in the state of Quintana Roo. Governor Carlos Joaquin reported that the three blazes have been recorded in the municipalities of Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Bacalar.

Several smaller brush fires have also been recorded around the state, most of which, were the result of intentional burns that became out of hand. José Javier May Chan, head of la Comisión Nacional Forestal (Conafor) for the state says they are making headway with the fires.

“Troops are being added in the municipalities, who are working in coordination with Conafor,” he said since brigades from Conafor are the first to arrive on scene. He also pointed out that there are seven municipalities with constant brigades equipped to deal with fires.

“There are also five rural brigades that are strategically distributed so that they are the first to act to deal with these forest fires in Quintana Roo,” he explained. “We have 3.7 million hectares, which represents 84 percent of the territory, so we ask society to avoid tossing their cigarettes or not completely extinguishing campfires, as these are one of the main causes for these fires,” he said.
