Wildfire burning on U.S -Mexico border near Arivaca grows to 500 acres

USA/MEXICO – CORONADO NATIONAL FOREST (KVOA) — A wildfire burning on the U.S.-Mexico border south of Arivaca has grown to 1,900 acres, according to fire officials.

The National Interagency Fire Center said the Border Fire was discovered just before 4:30 p.m. on Saturday March 19.

The fire is burning in rough terrain in the Coronado National Forest, causing a challenge for firefighters, the Arivaca Fire Department said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and no other details were immediately available.

A Red Flag Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for areas of Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham and Greenlee Counties from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Forecasters predict gusty southwest to west winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 40 mph, with higher gusts possible along the Arizona-New Mexico border.

Officials are urging people to be especially cautious and not burn or have any open flames.
