USA – There might be any number of reasons to dial 911 in L.A., but the ominous haze that  settled over the basin Thursday isn’t one of them.

Responding to concerns from folks around the region, the Los Angeles County Fire Department announced this afternoon that the spooky sky isn’t due to any flames here, but rather smoke that’s coming from wildfires raging up north—and the department is urging you not to call the authorities about it.

“The brown smoke now visible over much of Los Angeles County is the result of significant wildfires burning in the central and northern part of the state, including the #WindyFire and #KNPComplex wildfires,” the department tweeted, instructing worried locals to consult the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s incident information system website for further details.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District is also asking residents to be mindful of the air quality, but has not issued any advisories, ABC 7 reports.

Meanwhile, Northern California is in the throes of some actual emergencies. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation order Thursday for the unincorporated Mountain Gate area north of Redding at the far north end of the Central Valley due to the Fawn Fire.
