BERKELEY — Police have arrested a 12-year-old girl suspected of starting four separate fires in the Berkeley hills Friday.

Throughout the day, emergency personnel were called to four different reports of fires near the same street about a half-mile north of UC Berkeley, Berkeley police said in a news release Saturday.

At about 10:20 a.m., residents in the 1600 block of La Vereda Road alerted police of a small grass fire that they managed to put out themselves.  A few hours later at about 2 p.m., people reported flames in a grassy area between La Vedera Road and La Loma Avenue. As emergency responders arrived, they were alerted to a second fire of dried leaves on La Vereda Road.

Finally at around 7:30 p.m., firefighters were called back to the 2700 block of Cedar Street, which runs perpendicular to La Vereda, for a structure fire. All the fires were promptly extinguished, police said.

Police identified the suspect as a 12-year-old girl and arrested her. No other information about the fires or arrest was available Saturday.
