MEXICO – Kantunilkin, Q.R. — The state of Quintana Roo has recorded its first forest fire of the year. The fire was attended to Wednesday afternoon after authorities were alerted to a brush fire along the Lázaro Cárdenas highway.

Volunteer fire fighters from nearby towns around the main town of Kantunilkin, which is approximately 96 kilometers west of Cancun, attended to the roadside blaze. The fire was controlled quickly and prevented from spreading.

Rafael Dzul Chi, a member of the National Emergency Commission who was on site, said that the drought season has not yet started, but as predicted, the abundance of dry vegetation due to the passing of the hurricanes last year, has provided a great mount of fuel, facilitating the emergence of fires.
