Forest fires in the Kamchatka peninsula engulfed another 3,400 hectares of territory over the past weekend, a source at the regional forestry protection agency said. At the time of reporting, the Kamchatka region had eleven large spots of fire exceeding 14,800 hectares.
The situation remained complex in the Milkovski district where fires had consumed more than 9,000 hectares of forests. In the Kronotski wildlife preserve, the blazing area grew to 50 hectares from the initial 2 hectares during the weekend.
The efforts to curb the fires involve 200 firefighters, forestry workers and volunteers. Their work is impeded as the weather is unfavourable and the blazing areas are hard to accede by heavy vehicles.
