SPAIN – Montes de Socios (Forest Association of Soria), launches the “First Belt Against Fire” in the Natural Park of the River Lobos Canyon, thanks to the collaboration of the Provincial Council of Soria, Caja Rural de Soria, Maderas Hijos de Tomás Martín and the Montes La Sierra Management Board Association, Altos de los Enebros, Las Hoyas and Lentils, from Ucero.

The “fuegoZero” project is born of the conviction of the importance of fire prevention to avoid the present and future damage that fire represents, reversing its dynamics through actions that generate a triple positive impact: ecological, economic and social.

The objective is to fight against forest fires in Spain through the collaboration of society (entities, companies and citizens), making it participatory and sensitizing about the importance of protecting and preserving forests for all the benefits they provide, necessary for our existence and enjoyment (oxygen, absorption of CO2 emissions, water, landscapes, use, etc.).

The aim is to minimize the possibility of fires occurring and, above all, to try to limit their spread, creating a network of Belts Against Fire. As is well known, preventive measures are key, the focus should not be solely on the work of extinction.

This is the first time that such a project has been addressed, involving the whole society (companies, organizations, administration and citizens) asking for their collaboration to be able to execute it. It is a call to action for citizens and organizations to begin to understand that the conservation and maintenance of forests is everyone’s responsibility.

First Belt Against Fire

The “Belts Against Fire” are preventive actions in which efforts are optimized. This “First Belt Against Fire”, located in the mountains of Ucero and with an approximate length of 1.6 km by 100m wide (50m on each side), aims to safeguard some 160,000 trees, also preventing 125,000 tons of CO2 retained in them again pollute the air.

The preventive work will begin to run in mid-May and will be completed at the end of the month. They consist in generating a vertical discontinuity with the objective of reducing the fuel load, so that a possible fire loses intensity and speed, so that it is accessible so that the extinguishing means can work more quickly and efficiently. The tasks consist of cleaning the area of the invasive scrub, adapting the density of trees to the optimum (according to species); remove dry and diseased trees; prune the branches (preventing sparks from passing into the treetops); and finally, remove and crush the forest remains of the soil. This also contributes directly to increase the biodiversity of the Natural Area.

The subsequent maintenance of this preventive action will be carried out as it was traditionally done, with the herding of flocks of sheep and goats (controlling the regrowth of the invasive vegetation), thus always keeping the belt to the point, and making this action sustainable.

The initiative, in addition to generating a positive environmental impact, has an important economic and social return by generating employment in rural areas, since prevention work and subsequent maintenance through pastoralism are carried out by people from the local area, sometimes at risk of social exclusion.

Project “Zero fires in N.P. Canyon of the Lobos River “

The total project contemplates establishing four “Belts Against Fire” in this Natural Park that is part of the Natural Network 2000, is a Site of Community Interest (LIC) and Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA), to protect the great ecological value , of fauna and landscape that houses.

The “Belts Against Fire” will be placed on the edges of the main roads adding an approximate length of 7 km, generating 100m wide performance bands (50m on each side), in which the plant continuity is interrupted. With this total action, approximately 650,000 trees would be protected and the 500,000 tons of CO2 (approx.) Currently retained in the trees would be prevented from returning to the atmosphere. In addition, it contributes to obtaining clean energy (850 tons of forest biomass, approximately)

Conserving nature, fauna and biodiversity is everyone’s responsibility and there is much to be done. The FuegoZero project starts in the mountains of the Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park, a space of high ecological value, with indigenous forests of junipers, oaks, gall oaks and larícios pines, and with a great wealth of fauna (griffon vultures, golden eagles, Egyptian vultures, hawks, roe deer, wild boar, squirrels, otters, etc.). The objective is to continue with this preventive action, replicating it among other emblematic spaces of our country, provided that the collaboration of society and companies continues to be effective.

With the co-creation of the “First Cintron Against the Fire”, all the organizations, entities and individuals that have participated contribute to the achievement of the United Nations SDGs: 6,8,13,15 and 17: protecting forests, putting brake the loss of biodiversity, combating climate change and its effects; maintaining the quality and quantity of the water; promoting full and productive employment, decent work, and economic growth, sustained, inclusive and sustainable; establishing alliances to achieve among all a Sustainable Development and a better world according to the UN 2030 Agenda.
