USA –  FARGO, Ga. (WGXA) – Fire crews are working to control a massive wildfire in South Georgia that has now burned several thousands of acres of land in the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge.

Monday morning, officials are saying that more than likely the blaze won’t be contained until Nov. 1. It is currently burning more than 48,000 acres of the wildlife refuge and is only 4 percent contained.

Smoke from the fire is visible up to 25 miles away due to high transport winds.

Officials have set up a command center in Fargo, Georgia as crews report for work to continue to battle the fire.

“Everybody that works out here is very professional, they know their job duties. Everybody is doing the right things right,” said Ken Keuper, Middle Georgia-based forestry supervisor.

It all started on April 6 when a lightning strike hit the swamp, causing the blaze to spread.

A total of 435 personnel is enlisted to fight the fire, using more than eight helicopters and 34 fire engines as well as a number of other massive equipment.

“You gotta be as tough as the guys, pulling hose,” said equipment operator Amy Midgett. “It’s hard, physical labor. Pulling heavy hose, moving limbs, logs. The temperatures are hot, the humidity is hot, you know, it’s just hot out there working.”

A temporary flight ban, including for drones, is in place within a 10-mile radius of the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge but so far, no injuries have been reported.

Officials say a major rain event is what is needed to put the fire out completely.

Monday is day 18 of the wildfire. Forestry officials say they plan to increase manpower as needed.

The refuge provides habitat for threatened and endangered species of animals and more than 600 plant species. It is also one of the world’s largest intact freshwater ecosystems and is designated as a Wetland of International Importance.
