Bill would allow DNR retirees to keep pay while fighting wildfires

USA– A bill that would allow Michigan Department of Natural Resources retirees to keep their retirement pay while they help the department fight wildfires has passed through the House of Representatives.

House Bill 5128 would amend an exemption to the State Employees Retirement Act, allowing retirees to be hired to a limited term wildland fire suppression position without the suspension of their retirement allowance. According to a House Fiscal Analysis, similar exemptions already exist for the Department of Corrections and the Department of the Attorney General.

The bill was sent to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday.
