USA– Ariz. — More than a dozen female Perryville inmates are working alongside firefighters to put out the brush fire near a rural Arizona community.

KSAZ-TV reports that the 18 women arrived on the scene the day the Kearny fire began and have been working for three days to protect homes and stop the fire.

The women who make up the Perryville Wildland Fire Crew say they are treated as firefighters, not prisoners, when they’re working. They have gone through training and completed some of the same certification programs that other wildland firefighters do.

Many women on the crew say they want to become professional firefighters once they finish their time at Perryville.

The Perryville Wildland Fire Crew gets called out seven or eight times a year
