Indonesia–  President Jokowi is scheduled to give a speech for five minutes at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) climate conference in Paris on Monday, November 30.

The conference is attended by at least 147 Heads of States and world leaders who will express their views on climate change.

President Joko Widodo arrived in Paris to attend the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) of the UNFCCC accompanied by National Development Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil, Presidential Staff chief Teten Masduki Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, Forestry and Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo.

Sofyan Djalil said one of Indonesia’s agenda in COP 21 is efforts to prevent forest fires and for peatland rehabilitation to anticipate climate change acceleration.

“The most important thing is serious prevention so that there will be no more forest fires, especially those caused by human activities. If the cause is natural factor, it is hard to predict, but there is no harm in being prepared,” said Sofyan Djalil.

Sofyan guaranteed that the government is committed to prevent the recurrence of massive forest and peat fires throughout 2015. The government will accelerate peatland rehabilitation and will not issue new concession for peatland clearance.

Indonesia has prepared Intended Nationality Determined Contribution (INDC) document which is about the efforts and processes in achieving Indonesia’s target in reducing carbon emission by 29 percent by 2030, or increased by three percent from the 2020 target.

Sofyan said subsequent carbon emission will be focused on energy, transportation, waste management, food and several other sectors.
