Indonesia — A 12-hour fire, suspected of being started by the open burning of rubbish, razed more than 40 hectares of forest in Kuala Abang here.
Dungun Fire and Rescue Department senior officer Abdullah Ahmad said the fire was believed to have started about 2 pm in an open area of Kampung Kuala Abang and spread eight kilometres up to Kampung Rhu Batil.
The fire destroyed some agriculture, private and government reserve land. The hot weather and wind conditions hampered our efforts but we managed to control the situation about 2 am this morning. There were no casualties, he said here yesterday. Bernama
Three fire engines from Dungun, Paka and Marang and 23 personnel were rushed to the scene, he said.
He advised the public not to burn rubbish in the open, especially during the current hot and dry season.
