USA — A Cross Plains man died Thursday when he succumbed to smoke inhalation in a brush fire in a wooded area on Cedar Grove Road, Cross Plains Fire Chief Tommy Jackson said.

Firefighters at approximately 2:45 p.m. responded to the report of a grass fire at 8003 Cedar Grove Road.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Jackson said firefighters discovered a body while they were extinguishing hot spots from the fire.

Jackson said a man described to be in his 80s, identified as V.L. Moorehead, was found dead at the scene. He said Moorehead was burning some things in the woods when the smoke overtook him.

Moorehead lived near the property where the fire took place. His body was transported to NorthCrest Medical Center by Robertson County Emergency Medical Services, Jackson said.
