New Zealand — The fire service is battling a blaze in a scrub area in Waipoua Forest near Kaikohe in Northland.

Two helicopters with monsoon buckets and eight fire trucks are fighting the flames, which broke out around 4.15pm.

The fire has engulfed two hectares of forest and firefighters are trying to get to it through limited-access Pa Wakatutu Road.

Fire crews travelled from nearby rural Wekaweka and Omapere and Kaikohe, and another helicopter is on its way.
