Bahuguna expresses concern over rising cases of forest fire

India — Dehra Dun – Apprehensive over the rising incidents of forest fire, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna today said the fire lines would be increased upto 9,000 km from the present 2,500 km. Stringent action would be taken against persons found igniting fires, Bahuguna said. Nearly 30,000 hectares of jungle area in Uttarakhand since the hill state came into being over a decade ago. Fire lines are created by burning the dried grass, due to which the accidental fire does not spread owning to the gap in the contiguous grass. Speaking as chief guest at a programme organised by forest department and pollution control board to mark World Environment Day, Bahuguna also favoured setting up of Environment Directorate in the state. Bahuguna also called for banning polythene carry bags. Laying emphasis on general awareness towards environment conservation, the chief minister said special subject on environment ought to be included in the syllabus to connect maximum youths with environment conservation. Emphasising on maintaining a balance between environment and development, Bahuguna said the preservation of environment should not adversely affect due to acts related to environment. “We all have to put unified effort for green economy,” he said. Bahuguna also said a financial assistance of Rs 80,000 has been sanctioned for environmentalist Rambabu ‘Junglee’ who is presently admitted in a private hospital here.
