Bhutan — By 11am yesterday, the villagers of Narang gewog, Gomchu village and forest officials in Mongar contained the forest fire that started around 1pm the day before.

Narang gup Sonam Jamtsho said the wind and darkness made it impossible for them to put off the fire on October 23.

They started putting off the fire by 7am yesterday. “We were able to contain it because it was not windy,” he said.

He said they used tree branches and soil to contain the fire that began after sparks from stone blasting at a farm road construction site fell on dried leaves.

The report of was submitted to forest officials and an investigation on the damages will be done today. “There was no casualty nor damages to houses,” Sonam Jamtsho said.

He said road workers admitted that the fire stared from the blasting.
