Australia — One of the recommendations from the Bushfire Royal Commission following the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria was that annual prescribed burns be carried out to reduce the fire load.
The recommendation was to burn five per cent of bush on public land.

But such indiscriminate burning could have little effect on reducing fuel loads and some argue that in certain areas, prescribed burning can increase the bushfire risk.
