Zimbabwe — Villagers in Nyamandlovu have called on the authorities to discipline veld fire perpetrators.

This came after several plots in the Mimosa area were last week gutted by fires, allegedly caused by reckless farm workers clearing surrounding fields.

“There are farm workers were clearing fields using fire, but later failed to control it as it spread to other plots,” a local said.

Several villagers tried to put the fire but with no success because of the strong winds.

A farmer, Sipho Ncube, said that the fires leave cattle with no grazing land.

“We always urge our fellow villagers and farmers to be extra careful when dealing with fire,” he said.

Reports say that veld fires have destroyed more than 150 000 hectares of land countrywide since the beginning of the fire season. The Environmental Management Agency is always advising the public to avoid veld fires that lead to severe environmental degradation.
