Malaysia — The Forestry Department, together with several other government agencies, are intensifying the supervision and monitoring on thousands of hectares of peat swamp forest nationwide following the hot and dry weather brought about by the El Nino phenomenon.

Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department director-general Datuk Razani Ujang said they had also issued an instruction to all state forestry departments to give extra attention on the fire-prone forests.

“Periodical patrols are also being mounted in the forest areas prone to fire, but we have not received any report on forest fire so far,” he said when launching the Forestry Department Sports Meet at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) here Friday.

He said the relevant agencies had also taken several precautionary measures against forest fires like digging canals and wells, building dams and watch tower at peat swamps.
