Malaysia — More than 19 hectares of forest area at Bukit Kecil were destroyed in a bush fire which broke out yesterday.
However, the situation is reported under control now.
Kuala Terengganu fire assistant superintendent Mohd Khairul Anuar said more than 100 firemen and officers, including trainees from the Wakaf Tapai Fire Academy and fire volunteers from Kuala Nerus Manir were at the scene to control the fire.
He said the fire started about 2pm yesterday and heavy rain at midnight helped to douse the flame.
However, due to the wind and hot weather, the bush fire started again about noon today, he added.
As at 4pm, firemen were still working to douse the flame with smoke still billowing from the ground in some areas.
“As soon as we received the emergency call, firemen and fire engines were sent to the control the fire from spreading to residential areas and several office buildings belonging to the government nearby,” he told Bernama here today.
The government buildings include those occupied by the State Education Department, the Chemistry Department, Bukit Pak Apil Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) station and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Chong Hwa Wei Sin.
