Australia — The Victorian Government introduced SMS warning systems to warn people about approaching fires after recommendations by the Bushfire Royal Commission.

The CFA’s community safety manager, Mark Potter, says the phone messages and internet warnings are a good tool.

However, he says they do not replace more fundamental warning systems.

“We’re encouraging people as much as we can that the warning is not a telephone call or it’s not the neighbour knocking on your door to say that there’s smoke in the area, it’s that weather prediction the night before or that morning or just standing outside or thinking it’s hot, it’s dry, the wind’s blowing fairly hard that is my warning,” he said.
