USA — An unmanned aircraft has crashed after taking off from Fort Huachuca. A base spokeswoman says the Shadow aircraft was found Monday night about two and a-half miles north of an airfield where other unmanned aircraft operate.

The Sierra Vista Herald reports a small fire broke out at the crash scene. The U.S. Forest Service was alerted to the fire, which covered a little more than two acres.

The Shadow with a 13-foot wingspan is used by U.S. Army and Marine Corps units in Iraq and Afghanistan. The website Army-technology.com says the Shadow can locate, recognize and identify targets day and night from an altitude of 8,000 feet.

Officials haven’t said what caused the crash.
