India — Unknown persons broke into a block of Changa Manga National Park and chopped down thousands of trees before setting the entire area on fire late Sunday night.
The fire devastated hundreds of acres of woods and caused losses worth millions of rupees.
Changa Manga is the largest planted forest in Asia. It is situated in the outskirts of Lahore.
According to the Forest Department, thousands of Eucalyptus (Safeda) and Dalbergia Sisso (Sheesham) trees were stolen before setting the entire Block 4 of Changa Manga jungle on fire.
Mashaullah Jan, an officer at the Forest Department, said that an FIR has been lodged against unknown people.
Sources told SAMAA that the timber mafia and some Forest Department officials are involved in the crime together.
