USA —  A grass fire east of Crowley on Sunday that authorities say may have been sparked by a tossed cigarette burned about 300 acres of grass land.

Crowley County Emergency Manager Larry Reeves said the fire started at about 2 p.m. and was contained by about 4:30 p.m. It started at the intersection of Colorado 96 and 207, just east of town.

The fire followed along about three miles between railroad tracks and a drainage ditch, Reeves said.

Two outbuildings were destroyed and one firefighter was taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. He was later released, Reeves said.

A few homes in the fire’s path were evacuated. There were no reported injuries.

Colorado 96 was closed for about 45 minutes.
