Australia —  The mobile phone could soon help save lives in natural disasters.

A team at the University of Queensland is developing a mobile application aimed at young people that will provide crucial information in emergencies, like bushfires and cyclones.

Anthony Frangi, from the School of Journalism and Communication, says the app, which will be ready by the end of 2011, will be trialled in Queensland but has potential for use all over the world.

“What we hope to achieve is an application that assists people to access emergency information, that’s weather tracking and road closures and first aid tips, and find out details about the natural disaster at their location and also provide information to emergency services,” he said.

“We hope it will become a two-way mechanism.”
