FORT SUPPLY — A power line downed by high winds is being blamed for a wildfire that caused the evacuation of 27 homes and 110 camp sites Monday.

The fire started about 12:30 p.m. nearFort Supply Lake.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers RangerDon Underwood said the fire started when a power pole snapped because of 40 mph winds.

“It was an old pole that had deteriorated around the base, and the wind got it,” Underwood said. “The line snapped, and it arced and off it went.”

About 500 people were evacuated, and one abandoned mobile home was destroyed. By Monday night the fire was completely out, but fire crews remained on the scene to put out any hot spots, Underwood said.

Firefighters from Woodward, Fort Supply, Buffalo,Fargo, Gage and Tatesby fought the blaze.

Underwood estimated that as much as 150 acres burned.
