Bela Bela – Limpopo police confirmed on Thursday that one child, who was among 17 children who were burnt while trying to fight a veld fire on Tuesday, has died.

Provincial police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo said the child was with a group of 17 children who were playing soccer at a field at Vingerkraal, near Bela Bela just after 17:00 on Tuesday.

“The child died of burn wounds at Bela Bela Hospital on Wednesday,” he said.

He said the fire started at 17:30 on Tuesday.

“The place where it started has long grass and the children tried to extinguish it, but failed and they all got burnt,” he said.

The other 16 children are still recovering in hospital.

Mojapelo said it’s not yet known what caused the fire.

He said the SAPF forensic team from Pretoria had been asked to assist with the investigation.
