South Africa — The veld fire at Betties Bay in the Overberg region of the Western Cape has been brought under control. Fire chief at the Overstrand municipality, Riaan Jakobs, says it is estimated that about 3 000 hectares of mainly fynbos, have been destroyed.
The fire was started by lightning on Thursday morning and Jakobs says fire fighting teams from Cape Nature and the municipality are still monitoring a 13km fire line for possible flare-ups. There is no more fire lines burning, only some inside spots and some ambers. We’ll be on the line for today and tomorrow as rain is forecast for Monday and hopefully then we can withdraw.
Yesterday, ground teams from Cape Nature, Working on Fire and the Overstrand municipality in the Overberg region battled to bring the fire under control.
